Everything you're wondering, answered honestly.

Debt review is one of the most important financial decisions you'll make. You deserve straight answers before you commit to anything.

Going under debt review does flag your credit profile while you're in the process, this prevents you from taking on more credit, which is part of how the protection works. However, if you're already in arrears or being chased by creditors, your credit profile is already affected. Once your debt review is successfully completed and you receive your clearance certificate, the flag is removed and you can rebuild your credit.
Yes. Debt review is specifically designed to help you keep your assets. Your bond and vehicle finance payments are restructured into one affordable monthly payment, and creditors are legally prevented from repossessing assets while you're in the process. This is one of the biggest advantages of debt review over voluntary surrender or sequestration.
The application and creditor protection process takes around 7 days. The full debt review programme typically runs between 36 and 60 months depending on your debt size and income, though many clients finish sooner. You'll receive a clearance certificate once all debts (excluding your bond) are paid up.
There are no upfront fees. All fees are regulated by the National Credit Regulator (NCR) and are deducted from your single monthly payment, never paid separately. This includes a once-off restructure fee, a monthly aftercare fee, and a Payment Distribution Agency (PDA) fee. Your debt counsellor will explain every fee clearly before you sign anything.
No. Debt review is a confidential process between you, your debt counsellor, your creditors, and the Magistrate's Court. Your employer is not notified and is not part of the process. The only exception would be if a garnishee order had already been issued before you applied, in which case debt review can usually help reverse it.
Yes, you can exit debt review, but the process depends on your stage. Before the court order is granted, you can withdraw with minimal complication. After the court order, exit requires either paying all debts in full or applying for a court order to terminate. Speak with your debt counsellor, they're legally obligated to act in your best interest, including helping you exit if it's the right call.
Mzansi Debt is registered with the National Credit Regulator (NCR) of South Africa, the statutory body that regulates all debt counsellors under the National Credit Act 34 of 2005. Only NCR-registered debt counsellors are legally allowed to apply for debt review on your behalf.
No. Once you're under debt review, you cannot take on new credit until your clearance certificate is issued. This is a core protection of the process, it prevents you from sliding further into debt. Existing credit accounts are frozen, but you keep using essentials like bank accounts and store accounts for cash purchases.
A debt consolidation loan replaces multiple debts with one new loan, but you still owe the original full amount plus new interest, and you receive no legal protection from creditors. Debt review (debt counselling) is a legally regulated process that reduces your interest rates, extends your repayment terms, gives you legal protection from creditors, and is overseen by the courts. Debt review is almost always the better option if you're already struggling.
Missing payments can put your debt review at risk and may result in creditors applying to have the court order terminated, returning you to your original debt. If you're struggling, contact your debt counsellor immediately, most issues (job loss, medical emergency, salary cut) can be addressed by re-applying for a revised payment plan.
